With Vitamin D, aka the sunshine vitamin, in so many headlines it can sometimes feel overwhelming to process it all. We know Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient for our health and well-being for a number of reasons, but how can we sort through what’s fact or fiction?

We chatted with Susie Rockway, PHD, FACN, CNS, Vice President of Nutrition and Scientific Affairs at Nestlé Health Science, to learn more about Vitamin D so you can be your healthiest self.

First and foremost, what is Vitamin D and why does the body need it?

Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that becomes a hormone once activated in the body. 1 Vitamin D does many things in our bodies, but most notable is its role in calcium metabolism where it is key in facilitating the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate while also regulating bone metabolism.1*

But even more interestingly, science in the two last decades has found that Vitamin D, the hormone, does so much more. We now know it functions in many different tissues/organs and is particularly critical in helping our immune system work well. 1*

How much Vitamin D do people actually need and can they get a sufficient amount from food and sunlight?

The US FDA’s Daily Value for adults and children aged four years and older is 800 IU; and no, you really cannot get enough from food.

Our bodies were designed to get it from the sun, hence the nickname “Sunshine Vitamin”, but the amount of sunshine you’d need is only helpful when you live in a warmer climate during certain months. In winter months, we make virtually no vitamin D at all! During the summertime, 10 minutes under the right conditions can give you equivalent to 10,000 to 20,000 IU of this vitamin.

So are Vitamin D supplements a good idea?

Vitamin D supplements are a great addition to any health and wellness routine, as folks would need roughly 10 servings of salmon or almost 50 cups of fortified milk each day to get that magical level of vitamin D. 2

If you aren’t sure what your vitamin D levels are, most MD’s can easily have your blood tested to see if you are insufficient or deficient.

February is American Heart Month! As a company dedicated to health and wellness, we’re here to help provide insight surrounding key topics such as cardiovascular health.

We’ve tapped into our in-house expert, David Despain, MS, CFS, Director of Nutrition Science & Communications at Nestlé Health Science, who explains the science behind key ingredients and supplements that are essential for optimal heart health.

What key nutrients or ingredients are a good addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle?

First of all, there’s no substitute for a heart-healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet combined with regular exercise is the most important for your heart. A heart-healthy diet is one that includes a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy sources of protein such as nuts, legumes, seafood, lean meats and low-fat dairy products.

You’ll also want to incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week, or a combination of each.

In addition to a heart-healthy diet and lifestyle, there are a few supplements that may help in supporting your heart and body. These include fish-derived omega-3s, antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and vitamin C, along with other vitamins and minerals you might not be getting enough of such as vitamin B12 or magnesium.

Can you explain the science behind omega-3s and why they are essential for a healthy heart?

The first thing people ought to know is that there are three main types of omega-3s found in our diets.

There is alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, which is considered essential. ALAs are found mainly in plant-based foods such as walnuts and flaxseed. We need these omega-3s for the structure of every cell in our bodies. It’s also considered the “parent” omega-3 to what we call “long-chain” omega-3s, EPA and DHA.

EPA and DHA are mainly found in fatty fish such as salmon, anchovies, sardines, and mackerel. These omega-3s are the principal types that are associated with heart-health benefits. Getting enough fish-derived omega-3 oils such as EPA and DHA helps to maintain the health of your heart and cardiovascular system.

How can someone know if they are getting enough omega-3s in their day-to-day?

For a healthy heart, it’s recommended that we consume about eight ounces per week of a variety of seafood providing 250 mg on average per day of EPA and DHA. This is important because not all kinds of fish provide EPA and DHA. For example, tilapia or cod tend to have low amounts of omega-3s. You want to lean towards fatty fish such as salmon or trout.

When reviewing choices of supplements, it’s also most important to consider the amount of EPA and DHA in the product. In generally healthy adults, 250-500 mg per day of DHA/EPA is what’s recommended for supporting heart health.*

What is CoQ10 and why is it important for the heart?

CoQ10 is critical for your heart.* Remember that your heart is an organ made up of muscle with high energy demands. The cellular energy that our bodies produce can depend on our CoQ10 levels. The majority of CoQ10 is produced in our own bodies, but the amount we produce can decrease with age. There is some CoQ10 found in foods such as meats, fish, and nuts, but not enough to really counteract losses.

Additionally, cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs like statins can potentially deplete levels of CoQ10 in our bodies. Taking a CoQ10 supplement can help to increase levels in the body, plus replenish what statin therapy depletes.**

By raising CoQ10 levels in the body, it helps support heart and cardiovascular health.*

Are there any supplements would you recommend consumers add to their vitamin regimen to maintain optimal heart health?

Personally, I always recommend that consumers talk with their doctor regarding their specific needs – after all, everyone is different!

For optimal heart health, this could be omega-3s, because you don’t eat seafood regularly, or it could be vitamin C and other antioxidant nutrients because you don’t eat sufficient fruits and vegetables.* A general multivitamin containing nutrients such as vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium is also a good idea.

For a full list of heart health supplements, visit Naturesbounty.com.

**Note: Coenzyme Q-10 is not intended to serve as a replacement for Statin therapy, nor should you discontinue taking any prescribed medications while supplementing with Coenzyme Q-10.

One serving of fish oil provides 360 mg total of EPA, DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids. See nutrition information for total fat and cholesterol content.

Nature’s Bounty®, a leader in the vitamins and nutritional supplements space, recently conducted a consumer survey, which polled 2,000 Americans, to learn how people’s approaches to wellness and self-care have changed.

According to the survey, 46% of people have become more proactive about their health since 2019. It’s also inspired people to try various wellness items and trends – with vitamins being the number one choice. That’s not all! Almost half of surveyors (46%) claimed they recently started adding vitamins or nutritional supplements to their diet.

“As a brand dedicated to health and wellness innovation, it’s great to see people taking a more proactive approach towards the same and adapting their lifestyle and choices,” said Saumya Mishra, Senior Director of Marketing for Nature’s Bounty. “That includes making adjustments to their supplements and diet, trying new fitness routines and seeking offerings from experts they trust.”

Additionally, we learned that 3 in 4 people are more conscious of their immune health. How? By washing their hands more often (57%), getting more sleep (56%) and increasing their vitamin or supplement intake (56%).

“Immune support is proving to be a year-round priority for many and we know the important role a healthy immune system plays in order to be the best and healthiest version of yourself,” said Mishra. “Taking immune support supplements, focusing on a balanced diet and getting enough sleep can make all the difference.”
